In this article, I will share with you fantastic grammar tips on how to improve your OET letter writing. You can use this for your referral letters, transfer letters or discharge letters – whatever kind of letter that you can experience in the OET examination. These OET grammar tips will help you significantly in order to improve your scores. Remember that you are assessed on your grammar in the examination so it’s really important to make sure that you have mastered the correct English grammar.
I can’t stress enough how important this is because I see so many grammatical mistakes on different English language Facebook groups. So without further ado, here are the 3 practical tips that you can start doing TODAY to help you pass your OET exam:
Tip #1: Find a good quality OET teacher.
The first thing I should say at the start of the process is in order to improve your grammar you need to find a good quality OET teacher. Preferably a native English teacher or someone who has helped other students before achieve A’s and B’s.
TIP #2: Look at the feedback from your teacher immediately.
Our Swoosh VIP students post letters in our Facebook group and they immediately get feedback from them you need to improve and focus on moving forward. You need to review the mistakes they have identified with your grammar immediately so that you don’t forget them. for instance and you need to know from beginning to end where your mistakes are so that you can make a plan to improve on them.
Whatever it might be, after quite a few letters and even in the first couple of letters that you’ve posted and you’ve got feedback from your teacher on, you will be able to then create a grammar checklist and you will see patterns in where you are making your mistakes.
TIP #3: Create a grammar checklist
You could create a grammar checklist and create different categories: You could write articles, passive voice, adverbs, prepositions etc. and then when you go to all of your letters you can see if you have made a mistake with adverbs for example you put that into the adverb category. If you made mistakes with past tense, you can to put that in the past tense category. Then you can get list of mistakes that you’ve got for each and every category. You can put create two columns: incorrect and correct and you can see next to each other the key the difference between what was right what was wrong. Then you can start to do example sentences based on the teacher’s corrections.
Bear in mind that the advice above assumes that your teacher’s corrections are correct because I see some corrections teachers make and they’re not correct!
So just make sure you’ve got a good quality teacher!
You’ll start to see the difference after a while and you’ll be able to categorize your mistakes when you do your checklist and study them. You’d be able to know with much more clarity where your mistakes are using this method. A lot of students go into the real exam and they don’t know what their mistakes are because no one pointed it out to them and so they didn’t know in advance what their mistakes were and they didn’t have time to actually correct and work on those mistakes.
